the thrills and spills of the broad story
The thrills and spills of the Broad story
Stuart Broad made his first class debut for Leicestershire on April 27, 2005 in a County game against Durham.
The England call-up came in a year's time. On August 28, 2006 he was picked in a T20I XI to face Pakistan at Bristol. Two days later he made his ODI debut against the same opposition in Cardiff.
The early steps in international cricket were slightly rickety. On September 19, 2007 at the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa, Broad was hit for six sixes in an over by Yuvraj Singh.
Good news though was just around the corner. In December 2007, Broad was handed England Test Cap No. 638 by captain Michael Vaughan at SSC, Colombo.
On August 26, 2008, Stuart Broad took his first five-fer in international cricket. His 5/23 in the ODI at his home ground of Trent Bridge helped bowl South Africa out for a paltry 83.
In a 2009 T20 World Cup game against Netherlands at Lord's, Broad was needed to defend 7 off the final over but fluffed multiple run-out chances, including one off the last ball as the Dutch scampered to a famous win.
As ever, Broad bounced back immediately. In his first Ashes series, he led the charts for winners England with 18 wickets and was the only bowler in the series to record two five-fers. He also contributed 234 runs. He was the Player of the Match in the deciding Test at The Oval.
Stuart Broad took eight wickets and claimed the Player of the Match award in the semifinal against Sri Lanka as England's men's team broke their duck at World events to clinch the 2010 T20 World Cup.
in the 2010 Lord's Test against Pakistan, Stuart Broad scored his maiden international century, having walked in to bat at 102/7. His 169 surpassed his father Chris Broad's score of 162. They also became the first father-son pair to both score Test 100s for England.
In the Trent Bridge against India in 2011, Broad followed his first-innings 64 with figures of 6 for 46. This included a hat-trick, a sequence in which he dismissed MS Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh and Praveen Kumar.
Stuart Broad had a brief run as England's white-ball captain and notably led the side at the 2012 and 2014 T20 World Cups.
At the 2013 Ashes Test at Trent Bridge, Broad was at the centre of a controversy for not walking despite clearly edging Ashton Agar to slip.
At Chester-le-Street, Broad took a five-fer in each innings (5-71 & 6-50) as England clinched the 2013 Ashes series.
In the Manchester Test against India in 2014, Stuart Broad suffered a broken nose after being struck by a short ball from Varun Aaron.
The 2015 ODI World Cup was a particular low point for England and for Stuart Broad. He took only 4 wickets from 6 games. With the bat he managed only 13 runs as England failed to make the quarter-final stage. His white-ball career petered out in the year after that.
He bounced back in the 2015 Ashes at home, taking a career-best 8 for 15 in a defining performance at Trent Bridge that bowled Australia out for 60 on the first morning of the Test.
Another great performance came in Johannesburg at the turn of the year. Broad's 6 for 17 clinched an away series in South Africa. At the end of that assignment, he climbed to the No.1 spot in Test bowling rankings.
Stuart Broad was left out of England's XI when cricket resumed post the pandemic-enforced shutdown. But he took six wickets in his comeback Test and reached the historic mark of 500 Test wickets along the way.
Amidst the success, some infamy. In a 2022 Test match against India at Edgbaston, Broad conceded 35 runs in an over - the most expensive over in Test cricket history.
With 39 dismissals without scoring in Test cricket, Stuart Broad is second only behind all-time leader Courtney Walsh (43).
In his final series, the 2023 Ashes, Stuart Broad became only the second fast bowler (after James Anderson) to get to 600 wickets. He also stretched his tally of Warner dismissals to 17. * One innings left in the series.
In his last innings for England, Broad walked out to a guard of honour from Australia alongside his fabled bowling partner, James Anderson.
Broad took two wickets in his final innings as England roared back to level the 2023 Ashes 2-2. Broad finished with 604 Test wickets.
