Punjab Kings' IPL 2026 campaign has nosedived following a blistering start, but there's one constant that has yielded positive results throughout. Across IPL 2025 and 2026, PBKS have been the only team to have used just one opening pair: Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya - the two averaging 36.64 while going at 10.93. They lead the run-rate in the ongoing edition (12.94), allowing the likes of Cooper Connolly, Shreyas Iyer and other power-hitters to flourish.

The pairing with Arya has especially elevated Prabhsimran's record, and the numbers and observations further explain the method to madness. The right-hander became a regular in the PBKS setup only in 2023, but it wasn't until last year that he found consistency upfront.

The first key aspect of the partnership batting has been Arya taking on the bowlers from the get go, allowing Prabhsimran to play himself in. Against MI on Thursday, Prabhsimran was 10 off 11 by the end of the third over, having survived a dropped chance off Jasprit Bumrah, while Arya had raced to 21 off 14. He eventually went on to score 57 (SR: 178.12), top-scoring in an innings of 200/8.

Across 2023 and 2024, PBKS used seven different opening pairs, five featuring Prabhsimran. He struck at 133.12 in the first 10 balls of his innings, while the five others collectively went at 124.25. This implied he was the designated opener to get a headstart, but it seldom worked. One of the exceptions was the then record chase of 262 against KKR in 2024: PBKS had raced to 69/0 in five overs: Prabhsimran 54*(20), Jonny Bairstow 12*(10).

Arya's strike-rate in first 10 balls of an innings in the IPL has been 189.02, only exceeded by Vaibhav Sooryavanshi (209.52) in the tournament since 2025, among the ones to have opened at least 10 times. For the record, Arya has kickstarted PBKS' innings with a four or a six on eight occasions, the most for anyone for a team in the tournament since 2025.

Prabhsimran has himself gone at an impressive 152.17 in the first 10 balls, well over the tournament openers' aggregate of 150.3 in the timeframe. He has upped that when the situation demanded it, point in case: the 265-run chase against DC: Priyansh was 31* off his first 10 balls, Prabhsimran 32* - the latter closing out the powerplay (116/0) with six consecutive fours off Mukesh Kumar.

Other than being a left-right pair, the different methods to scoring has also made it challenging for the bowlers. Arya gets 63.7% of his runs against the quicks square of the wicket compared to 49% for Prabhsimran, who gets 30.8% in the V (since 2025) as opposed to Arya's 19.4%. Arya stays on the front-foot to 55.6% of the deliveries from quicks and plays 38.7% off the backfoot - all with a free-flowing swing. Prabhsimran has a more even split: 35% front-foot, 44.2% back-foot. The right-hander goes down the track to quicks to 14.2% of the deliveries - a number only exceeded by Abhishek Sharma (18.2%) among the 90 batters to have faced at least 50 balls of seam in the IPL since 2025 (Priyansh Arya: 1.3%).

Despite the consistency upfront with the bat, PBKS slipped to their fifth straight defeat in the tournament. They bat deep, but a rare middle-order failure meant they didn't have enough for a bowling attack that has had its struggles, not to mention the inefficiency in the field.

They have now lost six of their last seven games in Dharamsala where they play again on Sunday. The success of their opponents - the table-toppers - has been based on Bhuvneshwar Kumar's heroics with the new ball, more so of late. Needless to say, that could be one of the deciding battles in a pivotal contest between the 2025 finalists.
