Clinical Australia dismantle South Africa

Australia opened their 2026 T20 World Cup campaign with a commanding 65-run victory over South Africa on Saturday. On a used surface at Old Trafford, Australia opted for a spin-heavy attack and chose to bat first despite the venue's reputation as a chasing ground, and comprehensively defended their 172. Australia's winning total came courtesy Phoebe Litchfield's aggressive fifty in an innings where South Africa denied them sustained momentum with regular strikes. However, with the track slowing down further, Australia's four-pronged spin attack overwhelmed South Africa, who could muster only 107 in reply following a fatal collapse on either side of their skipper's 44.

Australia didn't get off to the best of starts with the bat. Georgia Voll fell for a duck in the opening over to Marizanne Kapp, and fellow opener Beth Mooney was dismissed soon after by Shabnim Ismail for 7, leaving them struggling at 24 for 2. However, Phoebe Litchfield turned the momentum with a spectacular, counterattacking half-century.

Having done the heavy lifting for Australia throughout her stay, Litchfield raced to 50 off just 24 deliveries, smashing a flurry of boundaries and a six before falling to Ayabonga Khaka immediately after the milestone. When Nonkululeko Mlaba dismissed Ashleigh Gardner for 1 just two balls later, Australia found themselves in a spot of bother at 62 for 4.

The recovery was guided by Ellyse Perry and Georgia Wareham, who put together a crucial 58-run partnership. Wareham played an aggressive cameo of 32 from 22 balls before a sharp catch by Laura Wolvaardt off Nadine de Klerk ended her stay. Perry anchored the middle order with a well-made 36 off 26 balls before being bowled by Mlaba. Australia's depth shone again as useful late contributions from Annabel Sutherland, who hit 21 off 14 balls, and Nicola Carey (13 not out in 11) helped Australia cross the 170-mark despite a late tumble of wickets.

South Africa's reply began disastrously. Captain Sophie Molineux struck in the very first over, trapping Sune Luus LBW for 1. In the following over, Kim Garth cleaned up Annerie Dercksen for four, leaving the Proteas reeling at 7 for 2. Wolvaardt tried to steady the ship at one end, while Nadine de Klerk - promoted to no. 4 - provided a brief counterattack by striking two sixes in her 25. However, the introduction of wrist-spin proved decisive as Wareham cleaned up De Klerk to break the stubborn partnership.

Wolvaardt again attempted to resurrect the chase with a 34-run stand with the experienced Kapp. However, a run-out against the run of play left South Africa in a spot of bother at 82/4. South Africa's diminishing hopes were dashed by Molineux, who got rid of her counterpart Wolvaardt to trigger a late collapse of 6 for 11. What proved fatal was the mounting asking-rate. Wolvaardt hit Molineux for an inside-out six over long-off, but with the required rate climbing up to 12, more risks had to be taken. Wolvaardt perished in the process, trying another inside-out shot but finding extra cover this time.

From there on, it only took Australian spinners three more overs to bundle out the South Africans for just 107 for a NRR-boosting win. King sent back Kayla Reyneke and Sinalo Jafta in the 15th over. Shabnim Ismail was trapped LBW by Ash Gardner, and then Wareham completed the formalities with two in the next over, including that of Tryon.
