A solid left handed opening batsman, Ashen Silva, has carved out a niche for himself by scoring heavily for Tamil Union and the Lankan cricket club. Regarded as a Test specialist, his role in the abbreviated versions of the game has been marginalized.

Silva was initially named in Sri Lanka's 20 member squad for the home Test series against Bangladesh in 2013 but failed to make the cut.
