ENGLAND VS NEW ZEALAND - 1st Test
ENG Inngs
Nathan Smith to Bashir, out Caught by Williamson!! Smith wraps it up! Back of a length in the channel, Bashir pokes loosely and nicks it to third slip as the ball nips away. Safe hands from Williamson who opens his left hip and takes it sideways. Bashir c Williamson b Nathan Smith 14(19) [4s-1]
Kyle Jamieson to Ollie Robinson, out Caught by Blundell!! Blundell goes up in appeal but there isn't much interest from anyone else. Good length in the channel, stays low and sneaks under the bat as Robinson is rooted to the crease. Oh they've taken the review. And guess what, there's a definite spike when it's next to the toe-end. Blundell went up straightaway and the decision is going to be reversed. What a comeback to Test cricket from Jamieson. Playing again after nearly two years, he picks up a five-for. Ollie Robinson c Blundell b Kyle Jamieson 1(5)
Nathan Smith to Harry Brook, out Caught by Kyle Jamieson!! This time the catch is taken and Brook will have to go. Complete silence at Lord's as England lose another. Pretty innocuous delivery this. It's down the leg-side, Brook picks it up with the pull shot but it only goes as far as fine leg. Held on safely by Jamieson with the reverse cup. Harry Brook c Kyle Jamieson b Nathan Smith 56(71) [4s-10]
Kyle Jamieson to Atkinson, out Lbw!! Absolutely dead in front! Nips back in, stays low and smashes the back leg. The finger goes up in a flash from the ump but Atkinson has reviewed. He must have taken it just because England have all three left. But the outcome is certain with the ball crashing into middle stump around halfway up. Came in sharply off a good length to beat the inside edge in defence. Atkinson lbw b Kyle Jamieson 4(11)
Kyle Jamieson to Stokes, out Caught by Williamson!! That's a superb take from Williamson in the slip cordon! Absolutely stunning from Williamson! In the corridor of uncertainty, pitches and seams away to open Ben Stokes up in his stance. He has a poke at it and gets a thick outside edge behind. Williamson at third slip dives to his right and takes it one-handed inches above the ground. It was dying on him but he made it look simple. Razor sharp reflexes from the veteran to pluck it out of thin air. The umpires took it upstairs to check whether it was a fair catch or not. The replay reveals that it was clean. His right elbow hit the ground after taking the catch but he used the area around his right shoulder to not lose control of the ball. Superb stuff. Stokes c Williamson b Kyle Jamieson 12(23) [4s-2]
Kyle Jamieson to Jamie Smith, out Bowled!! Knocked him over! An error in judgement has cost Jamie Smith his wicket! Not a good ploy to leave a ball on length on a surface which is offering sideways movement and also playing slow and low on certain occasions. Was on a good length outside off, seamed in nicely after landing. Smith lifts his bat skywards and to his horror, the ball crashes low into the off-stump. Kyle Jamieson is cock-a-hoop! England continue to slip down further and are all at sea at 55/5. Jamie Smith b Kyle Jamieson 1(6)
William ORourke to Root, out Caught by Blundell!! William ORourke has got the big fish! He has been sharp and incisive. He has consistently hit the back of a length area, generated good movement off the deck and reaps the reward this time. A sharp short of length delivery on off, angling in initially. It pitches and seams away nicely to open Joe Root up in his stance. Root tries to dab it towards third man but only manages to nick it behind. Tom Blundell takes a regulation catch. England are in all sorts of problems. This short burst from the duo of ORourke and Nathan Smith has put the hosts under tremendous pressure. Root c Blundell b William ORourke 1(8)
William ORourke to Jacob Bethell, out Lbw!! New Zealand review for a lbw! Mitchell also caught it at slip but I don't think there was an inside edge. There were two sounds actually. Was a pacy fullish delivery on off, pitched and seamed in sharply, Bethell tried to drive it down the ground but left a big bat-pad gap and the ball went right through it to ping him low on the pads. Time for the replays. UltraEdge shows a clear gap between bat and ball. Over to ball-tracking and it reveals three reds - it would have crashed into the middle of middle. The two sounds were of the ball hitting both the pads. The spell of rain seems to have quickened up the surface and the NZ seamers are breathing fire at the moment. Jacob Bethell lbw b William ORourke 6(22)
Nathan Smith to Ben Duckett, out Lbw!! Nathan Smith strikes! Duckett wasn't looking at his best and was struggling for rhythm somewhat and he now perishes. A back of a length delivery angling in nicely from outside off and keeps a bit low, Duckett was already hopping in a bid to keep it out but got beaten on the inside edge to get struck on the back leg. Umpire Rod Tucker thought about it and then raised his finger. Duckett had a chat with Jacob Bethell and eventually decided against the review. That looked quite adjacent to the naked eye. Ben Duckett lbw b Nathan Smith 19(37) [4s-2]
Kyle Jamieson to Emilio Gay, out Caught by Daryl Mitchell!! There's the first one! Jamieson opened him up a couple of times before this as well, and this time the edge has carried to first slip. Round the wicket, angled in on off stump and nips away off a good length. Some extra bounce as well. It catches the edge high on the bat and Mitchell takes a good low catch at ankle height. Gay's first crack at Test cricket is shortlived. Emilio Gay c Daryl Mitchell b Kyle Jamieson 8(14) [4s-2]
NZ Inngs
Ollie Robinson to Matt Henry, out Bowled!! Jamieson left Henry with two balls but it takes just one for Robinson who marks his comeback with a five-for! Hits a good length, gets it to nip away appreciably and opens up the tailender in defence. Middle stump out of the ground. New Zealand bundled out for 113 and England have a first-innings lead. Matt Henry b Ollie Robinson 0(5)
Atkinson to William ORourke, out Caught by Harry Brook!! A short leg and silly point were brought in for O'Rourke prior to this delivery. The threat of the short ball was waved in front of him, but it's the bluff as Atkinson goes very full. He's done the trick for England. It's around off stump, O'Rourke's front leg goes nowhere and he edges it to the slip cordon. Nicely taken by Brook. William ORourke c Harry Brook b Atkinson 1(17)
Josh Tongue to Nathan Smith, out Bowled!! No shot offered and the off stump is pegged back! Sharp nip-backer, Smith left it on the fifth stump line but it came back enough to hit the top of off. He played a couple of good shots but his stay is a brief one as Tongue hits the stumps for the third time in this innings - all of them hitting the off stump. Nathan Smith b Josh Tongue 15(18) [4s-2]
Josh Tongue to Glenn Phillips, out Bowled!! The off stump goes for a walk as Tongue sends down an absolute ripper! What a start to the day for him. It's almost a repeat of the Blundell delivery, angled in, nips away and goes past the outside edge while opening the batter up. Phillips was rooted to the crease there to a fuller length ball. Completely undone. Glenn Phillips b Josh Tongue 34(39) [4s-6]
Josh Tongue to Blundell, out Bowled!! The off-stump goes for a cartwheel! England are on fire while New Zealand are in dire straits! In the corridor of uncertainty at 144kph, pitches and nips away perhaps just a bit. Blundell is caught in the crease and plays down the wrong line to get beaten on the outside edge and the ball takes the off-stump out. His defence could have been tighter there. 50th Test wicket for Josh Tongue! The visitors are falling like ninepins. Blundell b Josh Tongue 4(21)
Ollie Robinson to Daryl Mitchell, out Bowled!! Knocked him over! Ollie Robinson gets a 4-fer! Almost a replica of the way Jamie Smith got out in the first innings! Mitchell hasn't learnt from the other person's mistake. Leaving deliveries on length when there's so much movement off the deck and in the air is an error in judgement. This one pitched outside off and jagged back in appreciably. Mitchell lifted his bat and could only hear the death rattle behind. The ball hit the top of off. Daryl Mitchell b Ollie Robinson 12(23) [4s-1]
Atkinson to Tom Latham, out Lbw!! Tom Latham has been trapped in front but he takes the review straightaway. Has he got an inside edge? Was a good length delivery that seamed in sharply from outside off. Latham was caught in the crease as he tried to keep it out but played down the wrong line to get beaten on the inside edge and got pinged on the front pad. UltraEdge shows a flat line. Over to ball-tracking and it returns three reds - it would have crashed into middle and leg. That wasn't a wise review from the New Zealand skipper. The visitors are all at sea at the moment. Tom Latham lbw b Atkinson 3(21)
Ollie Robinson to Rachin Ravindra, out Lbw!! The crowd right behind Robinson as he runs in. Oh Ravindra has been trapped on the back leg. Would you believe it, Robinson has three in the over! Lord's erupts once more and New Zealand are three down in a flash. All of these wickets have been off deliveries where the ball has done too much. Nothing that you can do about these, just absolute gems from Robinson. Once again the perfect good length from round the wicket, nips back in, traps Ravindra in the crease and smashes the back leg. He takes the review but it's umpire's call once more with the ball clipping the top of leg. An over to remember from Robinson. Rachin Ravindra lbw b Ollie Robinson 0(1)
Ollie Robinson to Williamson, out Caught by Emilio Gay!! Robinson has brought this place to life. Two cracking deliveries to Williamson back to back. Previous one nipped away, this one jags in, takes the inside edge onto pad and it's an absolute sitter for short leg. The length was such that his front foot was very tentative coming forward. Left him nowhere and now he has to go. Williamson c Emilio Gay b Ollie Robinson 0(2)
Ollie Robinson to Devon Conway, out Lbw!! Conway reviews after being given out LBW! That came back in very sharply and we'll have to see if it's missing leg because of the movement. He was well down the pitch there. Oh wow, it's barely clipping leg stump and we'll stay with umpire's call. Conway shakes his head as he trudges off while Robinson celebrates a wicket in his first over. Not a bad way to mark your return at the Test level. Was a wobble-seam delivery that came in sharply and went past the inside edge as he tried working through the on-side. It's an area where teams often target Conway, trying to challenge that inside edge of his. He's succumbed to it again. Devon Conway lbw b Ollie Robinson 1(5)
