On an engrossing third day at Trent Bridge, New Zealand and England traded punches through their pace attacks, with the visitors edging ahead by Stumps. Nathan Smith, Zakary Foulkes and Will O'Rourke struck at regular intervals to bowl England out for 354, although Harry Brook's fighting half-century and useful lower-order contributions ensured the hosts limited New Zealand's lead to 84. England then responded through Jofra Archer, whose hostile spell reduced New Zealand to 54 for 3, before Rachin Ravindra's unbeaten half-century and his unbroken 69-run stand with Daryl Mitchell carried the visitors to 120 for 3, extending their overall lead to 204.
New Zealand had an early setback in their second innings as skipper Tom Latham was trapped in front by Jofra Archer in the opening over. Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls tried to steady the innings but the pitch had some inconsistent bounce, with Conway copping a blow to the helmet trying to face an Archer delivery that took off from a length. The left-handed opener fell in the same over poking one outside off to hand a catch to first slip.
Even as Archer continued to extract disconcerting lift, Rachin Ravindra found boundaries off Gus Atkinson and Josh Tongue as New Zealand's lead stretched past 100. Nicholls, meanwhile, continued to struggle and even had a reprieve as Harry Brook didn't go for a catch at slip, thinking the 'keeper would, when the batter got an edge off Tongue. His misery finally ended when Brook took a sharp catch off Atkinson's bowling.
Ravindra, on the other hand, looked more assured as he struck two successive fours off Tongue. He received support from Daryl Mitchell, whose batting didn't appear too fluent but effective enough to help build a steady partnership. Ben Stokes introduced himself into the attack and bowled in tandem with Shoaib Bashir but they weren't able to separate the pair as they took their partnership past 50, with Ravindra also getting to a half-century with a boundary off Stokes. Archer was given a late burst nearing the end of the day's play but he too wasn't able to do any damage.
Earlier, it was a disastrous start for England who lost Joe Root and Jacob Bethell inside the first three overs of the day. Root failed to add to his overnight score of 21, trapped lbw by Nathan Smith while Bethell also fell for his overnight score of 74, getting an outside edge to second slip in O'Rourke's over. Nathan Smith then had Jamie Smith caught at first slip as England slipped to 234 for 5, having started the day at 223 for 2.
Brook scored a flurry of boundaries and was supported by Ben Stokes in a half-century stand as England began to rebuild. Stokes also had a lucky break as Conway put down a tough chance in Nathan Smith's over but the England captain was bowled by Foulkes a few overs later by a delivery that nipped back in and kept low. Brook, meanwhile, brought up a half-century as England went past the 300 mark, moving to 314 for 6 at Lunch.
New Zealand made a key incision five overs into the second session as Brook was bowled by Foulkes, with the ball beating the outside edge and striking the off stump. Even as New Zealand lost both their remaining reviews and took the second new ball, Atkinson and Archer added some useful runs. The catching wasn't great either with a couple of chances going down. Nathan Smith ended the eighth wicket stand by having Archer caught at first slip off the glove, with the ball rearing up from a length. O'Rourke and Foulkes picked up the last two wickets as England's innings ended on the brink of Tea.
Brief scores: New Zealand 438 & 120/3 (Rachin Ravindra 60*, Daryl Mitchell 26*; Jofra Archer 2-14) lead England 354 (Ben Duckett 113, Jacob Bethell 74, Harry Brook 58; Nathan Smith 4-91, Zakary Foulkes 3-35, William O'Rourke 3-53) by 204 runs.
