In a high-scoring thriller at Sabina Park in Kingston, Barbados Tridents held their nerve to secure a dramatic five-run victory over the Jamaica Kingsmen to get their campaign off to a winning start. After being put in to bat by the hosts, the Tridents mounted an imposing total of 206 for 3 courtesy explosive half-centuries from opener Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford. The hosts suffered early setbacks in the chase before launching a ferocious counterattack only to ultimately get restricted to 201 for 9 in a final-ball finish.
Tridents laid a solid foundation at the top order, led by King. He top-scored with a polished 73 off 51 deliveries, featuring five boundaries and four sixes. He found ideal support early from Zachary Carter for a 40-run opening stand, and then Quinton de Kock, who chipped in with a fiery 42 off 25 balls in a 72-run partnership for the second wicket. The innings culminated in a late flurry from Rutherford, whose unbeaten 50 off 28 balls propelled Barbados past the 200-mark.
King and Rutherford were involved in a 93-run stand, that came off 53 deliveries, with the latter leading the charge. Rutherford slammed three sixes and four more boundaries in his unbeaten knock.Jamaica's bowlers struggled to stem the run rate throughout, though Hassan Khan stood out as the most economical option, taking 1 for 19 from his three overs.
Chasing 207 for victory, the Jamaica endured a shaky start as Daniel Sams delivered a sensational opening spell. Sams rocked the home side early, removing three top-order batters in quick succession to reduce the Kingsmen to 8 for 3. However, despite the early damage, the Kingsmen refused to capitulate. Mid-order resilience from Keacy Carty, who struck 45 off 27, and captain Rovman Powell, who chipped in 38 off 24, reignited Jamaica’s chances and kept the required rate manageable.
Andre Russell then unleashed a devastating display of power-hitting. He bludgeoned 68 runs off just 38 balls, smacking nine maximums to push the hosts to the brink of an extraordinary recovery. He was assisted by Vitel Lawes, who chipped in with a brisk 32 off 20 deliveries in a 69-run stand at death. With 15 needed off the final over, however, Ramon Simmonds held his composure for Barbados. Simmonds removed the dangerous Russell and had a hand in the run-out of Lawes off successive deliveries to seal the five-run win.
Brief scores: Barbados Tridents 206/3 in 20 overs (Brandon King 73, Sherfane Rutherford 50*, Quinton de Kock 42; Hassan Khan 1-19) beat Jamaica Kingsmen 201/9 in 20 overs (Andre Russell 68, Keacy Carty 45; Daniel Sams 4-20, Chris Green 2-27) by 5 runs
