Bashir to Blundell, out Lbw!! Two wickets in the over for Shoaib Bashir. This was bowled from round the wicket and Tom Blundell went for the reverse sweep. Gets hit on the shoe and up goes the umpire's finger. Pitching in line, impact in line and it was hitting the middle stump, confirm the replays. The on-field decision stays and Tom Blundell is gone for a handy contribution. He couldn't make that dropped catch count though. Blundell lbw b Bashir 30(67) [4s-4]

Bashir to Nathan Smith, out Caught&Bowled!! This time he doesn't miss. Takes a sharp return catch. Nathan Smith smashes this back to the spinner and Bashir grabs it on the second attempt. The ball popped out initially, but he had enough time to take it on the second attempt. Dropped Blundell in the previous over, but makes sure to take Smith's catch. Root hugs him immediately, and so do the England players. Archer wasn't initially interested in celebrating, but he gives him a high five eventually. Nathan Smith c and b Bashir 6(28)

Jofra Archer to Blundell, 1 run, dropped by Bashir! Tom Blundell goes for a pull against the short ball, and the top edge flies straight towards deep backward square leg. Bashir charges in to gather it and gets his hands to it as well, however, fails to latch onto the catch. That should have been taken. Archer won't be a happy bloke. Bashir too has a disappointed look on his face as he looks skyward

Jofra Archer to Blundell, FOUR, pulled away! Jofra Archer has a smile on his face. This was a well-directed bouncer by him, Tom Blundell picks the length quickly, rocks back in the crease and pulls it away to the deep backward square leg boundary

Stokes to Mitchell Santner, out Caught by Jacob Bethell!! England get another one, Stokes gets another one. The review hasn't worked for Santner who will have to walk back. That was a well-directed bumper by the England captain. The first replay showed it hit the sweatband but the one from the side-on angle suggests it went off the arm guard. The on-field umpire gave it out after the ball ballooned to gully but Santner wasn't really sure. The left-hander tried to duck under it but couldn't get his hands down. He will have to walk back but you would say that was a mistake from the third umpire. As soon as Santner reviewed, Stokes had a word with him and asked him where the ball hit him, Santner pointed to the arm guard but Stokes pointed back that it was the sweatband. Atkinson to Blundell, FOUR, much better line and length from Atkinson, just around off but Blundell plays it late and with soft hands. The outside edge goes to third man for another boundary

Atkinson to Blundell, 2 runs, 400 up for New Zealand! Short and coming into the batter who rocks back and pulls it to deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs. Bashir does well to prevent two runs for his side

Atkinson to Blundell, FOUR, there it is. Gets an over-pitched delivery outside off and drives it perfectly square of the wicket to collect his first boundary of the innings. That will help him break the shackles

Stokes to William ORourke, out Caught by Emilio Gay!! That should be taken, and ORourke will have to walk back. Wicket No.3 for Stokes and that's a poor shot from ORourke. He wasn't getting anything in his arc and suddenly decides to heave a length delivery outside off climbing onto him. Also came back in a bit. Gets it off the upper part of the bat and the ball goes high in the air towards point where Gay completes an easy catch. A gutsy knock comes to an end, but ORourke will be disappointed with his shot selection. William ORourke c Emilio Gay b Stokes 19(38) [4s-4]

Stokes to Daryl Mitchell, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Mitchell is not convinced. But it does not matter England have their first wicket of the day and it is once again their skipper who provides the breakthrough. Stokes is pumped as he sees the spike on UltraEdge. Good length ball, angled in and Mitchell is drawn into the forward defensive, the ball holds its line and kisses the outside-edge before going to Smith. The bat was also close to the pad when the ball was next to the bat. Was it bat brushing the pad? The reactions of Mitchell after playing that and even after the decision suggests, he didn't nick it. Stokes to William ORourke, no run, dropped! Smith dives to his right and gets a fingertip. He makes it hard for Root as well and he can't hold the deflection. That was Root's catch. Classic Stokes delivery - back of a length, angling in and straightening, ORourke is caught in the crease and has a poke. The outside-edge flies to the right of Smith and he was slightly wrongfooted when he put in the dive. He couldn't reach it and foils it for Root as well. That ball was going straight to Root if not for Smith's intervention. Stokes just turns around and starts walking to his run-up

Stokes to William ORourke, FOUR, another four for ORourke. This was in the air but wide of Bethell. The frustration creeping in as Stokes shakes his head. Fullish delivery and ORourke is lured into the drive, he goes hard and the outside-edge flies to the right of gully

It not only brought about Ravindra's wicket but also Nicholls'. This is a brute from Archer. He gets the short of length delivery to climb awkwardly around off, Nicholls can't help but go feeling for the ball, the outside-edge is found and it flies to Smith, who takes it above his head. But this is a reckless shot. Back of a length, not there for the pull and Ravindra was also fetching it from outside off, the top-edge goes straight up and Smith barely had to move to take that. Josh Tongue to Nicholls, FOUR, lovely shot! That's his third boundary but it is the best of the lot. Full pitcher around off, Nicholls transfers his weight into the front foot, brings his bat down straight and caresses the drive through extra cover. No need to run for that..

Root to Rachin Ravindra, FOUR, Ravindra is off and running. Root overcooks the flighted delivery, lands it outside off and Ravindra does not miss out, he gets a good stride in and creams the drive wide of mid-off

Root to Devon Conway, out Caught by (sub)Fisher!! One brings two. Both openers back in the pavilion in consecutive overs. The two most senior players for England have stepped up. Stokes providing the first breakthrough and Root backing it up by sending Conway on his way. This was a needless shot. But that's how Conway has been playing in this session. He's been taking his chances and this one does not come off. Drifting in from round the wicket, Conway comes down the track and looks to go down the ground, gets more off the inner half and the ball balloons towards deep mid-on. Fisher moves to his left, bends down and takes a good catch. Another fine knock comes to an end and like his captain, Conway walks off to a standing ovation. Stokes to Tom Latham, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Finally, finally there's something for the home crowd to cheer. They had to wait for a long time. And the captain has delivered. He's been the only one who's tried few things and made the batters think. No wonder he's delighted and has a smile on his face. This was short alright but not wide enough for Latham to play the cut, he still goes for it and the outside-edge is gobbled up with Smith. Latham went "no" as soon as he played that. It looked like a tired shot. Nonetheless, the New Zealand captain has played a fantastic knock and walks off to an ovation. Tom Latham c Jamie Smith b Stokes 151(214) [4s-15]

Root to Devon Conway, 1 run, 83 kph, gives it a loop, and Conway drives it to long-on for a single. Also brings up his 150 and raises the bat to the crowd

Jacob Bethell to Tom Latham, FOUR, fires one in full at 94 kph and Latham brings out the reverse sweep. Manages to beat the only man behind square in the off side and collects an easy boundary

Jacob Bethell to Devon Conway, 1 run, worked away to the off side and that brings up the 300-run stand between Conway and Latham. This has been some partnership by the New Zealand opening duo and they don't seem to be slowing down

Atkinson to Tom Latham, FOUR, makes a bit of room and Atkinson offers him a half-volley just outside off. Latham transferred his weight and eased it through the covers for a delightful boundary

The left-hander went for the pull but was hurried by the pace. Probably got high on him but that should have been taken by a keeper playing at any level
