W
Jofra Archer to Ben Sears, out Lbw!! New Zealand finish on 438! Pitched up by the bowler around middle and leg, a quick delivery that swings in slightly. Ben Sears tries to squeeze it out, but fails to do so. Hit on the pads, and replays confirm this was crashing into the stumps. Ben Sears is the last man out. And the England spectators welcome their players back with a gentle round of applause. Ben Sears lbw b Jofra Archer 0(1)
114
W
Bashir to Blundell, out Lbw!! Two wickets in the over for Shoaib Bashir. This was bowled from round the wicket and Tom Blundell went for the reverse sweep. Gets hit on the shoe and up goes the umpire's finger. Pitching in line, impact in line and it was hitting the middle stump, confirm the replays. The on-field decision stays and Tom Blundell is gone for a handy contribution. He couldn't make that dropped catch count though. Blundell lbw b Bashir 30(67) [4s-4]
113.3
W
Bashir to Nathan Smith, out Caught&Bowled!! This time he doesn't miss. Takes a sharp return catch. Nathan Smith smashes this back to the spinner and Bashir grabs it on the second attempt. The ball popped out initially, but he had enough time to take it on the second attempt. Dropped Blundell in the previous over, but makes sure to take Smith's catch. Root hugs him immediately, and so do the England players. Archer wasn't initially interested in celebrating, but he gives him a high five eventually. Nathan Smith c and b Bashir 6(28)
112.2
Jofra Archer to Blundell, 1 run, dropped by Bashir! Tom Blundell goes for a pull against the short ball, and the top edge flies straight towards deep backward square leg. Bashir charges in to gather it and gets his hands to it as well, however, fails to latch onto the catch. That should have been taken. Archer won't be a happy bloke. Bashir too has a disappointed look on his face as he looks skyward
110.3
4
Jofra Archer to Blundell, FOUR, pulled away! Jofra Archer has a smile on his face. This was a well-directed bouncer by him, Tom Blundell picks the length quickly, rocks back in the crease and pulls it away to the deep backward square leg boundary
101
W
Stokes to Mitchell Santner, out Caught by Jacob Bethell!! England get another one, Stokes gets another one. The review hasn't worked for Santner who will have to walk back. That was a well-directed bumper by the England captain. The first replay showed it hit the sweatband but the one from the side-on angle suggests it went off the arm guard. The on-field umpire gave it out after the ball ballooned to gully but Santner wasn't really sure. The left-hander tried to duck under it but couldn't get his hands down. He will have to walk back but you would say that was a mistake from the third umpire. As soon as Santner reviewed, Stokes had a word with him and asked him where the ball hit him, Santner pointed to the arm guard but Stokes pointed back that it was the sweatband. The third umpire didn't look at too many replays, he saw the straight on view and then the UltraEdge before making the decision. Mitchell Santner c Jacob Bethell b Stokes 4(12) [4s-1]
100.2
4
Stokes to Mitchell Santner, FOUR, another edge, another boundary through the third man region. Comes in with the angle and then holds its line just outside off. Santner plays it close to his pads, with soft hands as the edge beats the slip cordon and rolls to the boundary
100
4
Atkinson to Blundell, FOUR, shot! Half-volley and Blundell plays a perfect cover drive to get back-to-back boundaries. After some tight overs, Atkinson has conceded three fours in this over
99.5
4
Atkinson to Blundell, FOUR, much better line and length from Atkinson, just around off but Blundell plays it late and with soft hands. The outside edge goes to third man for another boundary
99.4
Atkinson to Blundell, 2 runs, 400 up for New Zealand! Short and coming into the batter who rocks back and pulls it to deep mid-wicket for a couple of runs. Bashir does well to prevent two runs for his side
99.2
4
Atkinson to Blundell, FOUR, there it is. Gets an over-pitched delivery outside off and drives it perfectly square of the wicket to collect his first boundary of the innings. That will help him break the shackles
97
W
Stokes to William ORourke, out Caught by Emilio Gay!! That should be taken, and ORourke will have to walk back. Wicket No.3 for Stokes and that's a poor shot from ORourke. He wasn't getting anything in his arc and suddenly decides to heave a length delivery outside off climbing onto him. Also came back in a bit. Gets it off the upper part of the bat and the ball goes high in the air towards point where Gay completes an easy catch. A gutsy knock comes to an end, but ORourke will be disappointed with his shot selection. William ORourke c Emilio Gay b Stokes 19(38) [4s-4]
94.3
W
Stokes to Daryl Mitchell, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Mitchell is not convinced. But it does not matter England have their first wicket of the day and it is once again their skipper who provides the breakthrough. Stokes is pumped as he sees the spike on UltraEdge. Good length ball, angled in and Mitchell is drawn into the forward defensive, the ball holds its line and kisses the outside-edge before going to Smith. The bat was also close to the pad when the ball was next to the bat. Was it bat brushing the pad? The reactions of Mitchell after playing that and even after the decision suggests, he didn't nick it. Daryl Mitchell c Jamie Smith b Stokes 11(33) [4s-1]
92.4
Stokes to William ORourke, no run, dropped! Smith dives to his right and gets a fingertip. He makes it hard for Root as well and he can't hold the deflection. That was Root's catch. Classic Stokes delivery - back of a length, angling in and straightening, ORourke is caught in the crease and has a poke. The outside-edge flies to the right of Smith and he was slightly wrongfooted when he put in the dive. He couldn't reach it and foils it for Root as well. That ball was going straight to Root if not for Smith's intervention. Stokes just turns around and starts walking to his run-up
92.3
4
Stokes to William ORourke, FOUR, another four for ORourke. This was in the air but wide of Bethell. The frustration creeping in as Stokes shakes his head. Fullish delivery and ORourke is lured into the drive, he goes hard and the outside-edge flies to the right of gully
91.3
4
Josh Tongue to William ORourke, FOUR, edged and four! Tongue induces the false shot but the ball does not go to hand. Full pitcher and ORourke is drawn into the drive, he goes for it with laden feet and the outside-edge goes through the slip cordon - between first slip and gully
89
4
Jofra Archer to William ORourke, FOUR, shot! That's the shot of the day so far. No wonder ORourke has a smile on his face, he enjoyed that. Good length ball outside off, ORourke does not move his feet but meets it on top of the bounce and creams it in front of square on the off-side. That shot would have made any top-order batter proud
88.4
4
Jofra Archer to William ORourke, FOUR, 135ks good length ball around off, ORourke wasn't sure whether to play or leave, he hangs his bat away from the body and dabs it through the slip cordon, splits second slip and gully to pick up the boundary
85.1
4
Josh Tongue to Daryl Mitchell, FOUR, ufff! That wasn't far from the off-stump. Mitchell wasn't sure whether to play or leave, he's late in lifting his bat up and the under-edge flies past off-stump, beats Smith to the left and races away
84.1
W
Jofra Archer to Nicholls, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Back to back wickets. That will be stumps on day 1. What an end to the day! How big was that boundary save by Bashir? It not only brought about Ravindra's wicket but also Nicholls'. This is a brute from Archer. He gets the short of length delivery to climb awkwardly around off, Nicholls can't help but go feeling for the ball, the outside-edge is found and it flies to Smith, who takes it above his head. The England players are jubilant. They are waiting for the new batter but the umpires decide it is time. Stokes leads the team off the field. Nicholls c Jamie Smith b Jofra Archer 36(48) [4s-6]
84
W
Atkinson to Rachin Ravindra, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Stokes and rest of England run towards Bashir. It was his one saved run that kept Ravindra on strike else it would have been Nicholls. But this is a reckless shot. Back of a length, not there for the pull and Ravindra was also fetching it from outside off, the top-edge goes straight up and Smith barely had to move to take that. England fighting back towards the fag end of the day. Rachin Ravindra c Jamie Smith b Atkinson 7(22) [4s-1]
83.3
4
Atkinson to Nicholls, FOUR, creamed! Atkinson dangles a carrot outside off and Nicholls takes the bait. Full and outside off, he gets a good stride in and smashes the drive in front of square. The new ball races away off the turf..
80.1
4
Jofra Archer to Nicholls, FOUR, wrong line and punished. Short and around leg, Nicholls plays his trademark one-legged pull, gets on top of the bounce and rolls his wrists over to place it fine
76.5
4
Jofra Archer to Nicholls, FOUR, nicely done! Again Archer does not get the height on the short of length delivery, the angle too was taking it down leg, Nicholls hops on one leg and pulls it to fine leg. The fielder was square in the deep and had no chance of stopping that
75.1
4
Josh Tongue to Nicholls, FOUR, lovely shot! That's his third boundary but it is the best of the lot. Full pitcher around off, Nicholls transfers his weight into the front foot, brings his bat down straight and caresses the drive through extra cover. No need to run for that..
74.3
4
Jofra Archer to Nicholls, FOUR, short of length delivery, does not quite bounce high to trouble Nicholls, he swivels around and pulls it to deep square leg. He was in complete control of that shot
74.2
4
Jofra Archer to Nicholls, FOUR, in the air and just wide. Short of length around the hips, Nicholls can't control himself and plays the glance, the ball goes uppishly towards leg slip and it just evades the fielder's grasp
73.4
4
Root to Rachin Ravindra, FOUR, Ravindra is off and running. Root overcooks the flighted delivery, lands it outside off and Ravindra does not miss out, he gets a good stride in and creams the drive wide of mid-off
73.1
W
Root to Devon Conway, out Caught by (sub)Fisher!! One brings two. Both openers back in the pavilion in consecutive overs. The two most senior players for England have stepped up. Stokes providing the first breakthrough and Root backing it up by sending Conway on his way. This was a needless shot. But that's how Conway has been playing in this session. He's been taking his chances and this one does not come off. Drifting in from round the wicket, Conway comes down the track and looks to go down the ground, gets more off the inner half and the ball balloons towards deep mid-on. Fisher moves to his left, bends down and takes a good catch. Another fine knock comes to an end and like his captain, Conway walks off to a standing ovation. Devon Conway c (sub)Fisher b Root 157(224) [4s-22 6s-3]
72.1
W
Stokes to Tom Latham, out Caught by Jamie Smith!! Finally, finally there's something for the home crowd to cheer. They had to wait for a long time. And the captain has delivered. He's been the only one who's tried few things and made the batters think. No wonder he's delighted and has a smile on his face. This was short alright but not wide enough for Latham to play the cut, he still goes for it and the outside-edge is gobbled up with Smith. Latham went "no" as soon as he played that. It looked like a tired shot. Nonetheless, the New Zealand captain has played a fantastic knock and walks off to an ovation. Tom Latham c Jamie Smith b Stokes 151(214) [4s-15]
70.5
H
Stokes to Tom Latham, 1 run, 150 for Latham. He raises his bat and acknowledges the applause from the crowd. Quick handshake between the two batters and they carry on. Once again Latham uses loose hands and drops it into the off-side
68.1
H
Root to Devon Conway, 1 run, 83 kph, gives it a loop, and Conway drives it to long-on for a single. Also brings up his 150 and raises the bat to the crowd
68
4
Jacob Bethell to Tom Latham, FOUR, fires one in full at 94 kph and Latham brings out the reverse sweep. Manages to beat the only man behind square in the off side and collects an easy boundary
67.3
Jacob Bethell to Devon Conway, 1 run, worked away to the off side and that brings up the 300-run stand between Conway and Latham. This has been some partnership by the New Zealand opening duo and they don't seem to be slowing down
65.4
4
Atkinson to Tom Latham, FOUR, makes a bit of room and Atkinson offers him a half-volley just outside off. Latham transferred his weight and eased it through the covers for a delightful boundary
64.1
6
Bashir to Devon Conway, SIX, Conway takes charge as the left-hander comes forward and smokes one down the ground for a six
63.3
4
Atkinson to Tom Latham, FOUR, Latham makes England pay! Times the pull perfectly in front of the square and gets a boundary. That's also the highest stand for New Zealand against England
63.1
Atkinson to Tom Latham, no run, is that a dropped chance? Smith has put down a sitter behind the stumps. This was short and angling into the rib-cage area of Latham who was cramped for room. The left-hander went for the pull but was hurried by the pace. Got some glove to it and the ball went straight to Smith who went to his right and it was there to be caught at the right height, but ended up making a mess of it. Probably got high on him but that should have been taken by a keeper playing at any level
62.2
4
Bashir to Tom Latham, FOUR, short once again and enough pace on the ball for Latham to hammer it to deep mid-wicket for an easy boundary
61.5
4
Atkinson to Devon Conway, FOUR, catch it is the call but Conway has managed to hit the gap. Short and pulled away with ease between the two fielders at deep backward square leg
60.5
4
Josh Tongue to Tom Latham, FOUR, take that says Latham! Gets on top of the bounce and times the pull to perfection to backward square leg for a boundary. England have filled the on side with the fielders but Latham still manages to find the gap
60.3
6
Josh Tongue to Devon Conway, SIX, Conway is not going to back down! Short, doesn't get as high as the bowler would have liked and Conway helps it over deep backward square leg for a six. He is looking in the mood and this could prove to be dangerous for England
60.2
Josh Tongue to Tom Latham, 1 run, another bumper into the body and Latham pulls it fine behind square for one. That also brings up the 250-run stand
60
4
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, poor end to the over. Short and wide and Conway thumps it to deep backward point for a boundary
59.1
6
Bashir to Devon Conway, SIX, that's been thumped for a maximum! Floater from the offspinner and Conway comes down the track, makes it into a full-toss and whacks it over deep mid-wicket for a six. First six of the innings
57.3
4
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, short once again and Conway doesn't miss out this time around. Short and on the stumps, Conway rocks back and hammers it to deep mid-wicket
56.5
4
Josh Tongue to Devon Conway, FOUR, he gets bat on this one and whips it to deep square leg for a fine boundary. The line and length was there to be hit and Conway makes the most of it. Hits it in the air and manages to find the gap behind the square region
55.5
H
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, Test hundred No.8 for Devon Conway! His second against England, after that double hundred on debut at Lord's. Gets the length, gets the line and carves it through the sweeper cover region for a boundary. Just opened the face of the bat, something he has done amazingly well in this innings. Comes to Latham who congratulates him and also gets a well-deserved applause from the crowd
55.4
4
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, another one in the early 80s and Conway charges down the track and lofts it over mid-on for a boundary. He wants to get to the landmark quickly
50.2
H
Stokes to Tom Latham, FOUR, hundred for Latham. The helmet comes off and the bat is raised. 17th Test ton for the New Zealand skipper. The series is level, this is the decider, he wins a good toss and is leading the way. Superb knock! Conway walks across and embraces his partner. Coming to the ball: Poor delivery from Stokes - angling down leg, Latham helps it along towards fine leg and Atkinson's desperate dive is not enough to prevent the boundary
50.1
4
Stokes to Tom Latham, FOUR, in the air and wide of gully. New Zealand's 200 is up. Short and outside off, gets a bit big on Latham as he looks to slash, hence he's not in complete control but gets it wide of Bethell and the ball runs away..
49.5
4
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, that's the third boundary Conway has picked up in that region. He shimmies down the pitch, gets a bit too close to the ball and jams the drive past a diving Archer at mid-on. Archer is slightly square and hence is not able to get across to make the stop
45.5
4
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, easily done! He played a similar kind of shot in Bashir's previous over. Very full delivery, Conway brings the bottom hand into play and jams the drive into the ground. He uses his wrists to place it to the right of mid-on and sends it racing away
43.4
4
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, shot! Conway comes down the track, almost yorks himself but manages to jam it hard into the ground, beats a diving Bashir to his left and the ball races away
41.4
4
Bashir to Devon Conway, FOUR, nicely done! 85ks flatter, sliding across and Conway plays it really late. He opens the bat face and guides it behind square on the off-side. No stopping that on this fast outfield
40.2
4
Jofra Archer to Tom Latham, FOUR, full length delivery from the pacer and Latham guides it to third man to collect a boundary
38.4
4
Jofra Archer to Tom Latham, FOUR, full and coming into the batter, Latham plays it late and opens the face of the bat to guide it to third man for a boundary
38.2
Jofra Archer to Devon Conway, 1 run, swinging-in full-toss on the stumps and Conway whips it to the leg side for one run to bring up the 150-run opening stand
37.4
4
Bashir to Tom Latham, byes, FOUR, drops this one down the leg and no turn means it beats the batter and the keeper for four byes. Nothing much the batter or the keeper could have done about that
35.3
4
Atkinson to Devon Conway, FOUR, full and drives beautifully for a boundary! Atkinson offers a half-volley and Conway gets on the front foot and times the drive to perfection. The left-hander has played some stunning drives in this innings
31
4
Josh Tongue to Devon Conway, FOUR, that's much better! Full and enough room on offer, Conway bends the knee and drives it crisply for a boundary
31
4
Josh Tongue to Devon Conway, no ball, FOUR, outside edge and that goes towards third man for four. Width on offer and Conway went chasing, only to get a big edge that went between the slip fielders. Wouldn't have mattered as the umpire calls it a no-ball
30.3
Josh Tongue to Tom Latham, leg byes, 1 run, Tongue goes full and on the pads to Latham and knocks him off the ground. There is no bat involved but the ball had pitched on the leg stump and the replays show it would have missed the stumps by some distance. England have wasted their first review. It was the bowler who was convinced. That was a good delivery though, getting it to come back in. Was almost a yorker and a bit to the left, it would have hit the stumps
29.1
4
Atkinson to Devon Conway, FOUR, full toss and that was there to be punished, which is exactly what Conway does. Outside off and Conway drives it firmly to deep extra cover for another boundary
28.3
F
Josh Tongue to Devon Conway, 1 run, 14th Test fifty for Conway! Hasn't had a great series but is making the most of this superb batting surface. Gets there with a gentle nudge to fine leg for one, raises his bat and gets the applause
28.2
4
Josh Tongue to Devon Conway, FOUR, gets a bit of room and Conway stands tall and guides it past the third man region to move to 49
27.5
4
Stokes to Tom Latham, FOUR, not sure Archer picked it in the deep. Short of length delivery, Latham got into a nice position, rode the bounce and pulled it backward of square. Archer was late to react and the ball beat him to the fence
26
4
Stokes to Devon Conway, FOUR, shot! Short of length delivery, bit of extra bounce on this and Conway does well to get on top of the bounce, goes on his toes and punches with an angled bat, beats a diving Bethell at gully and picks up the boundary
23.3
4
Stokes to Tom Latham, FOUR, this time Latham connects but it is not convincing. Short and wide outside off, Latham throws his bat on the slash and the outside-edge flies over the slip cordon. As they say if you slash, slash hard and that's what Latham did
23.1
F
Stokes to Tom Latham, 2 runs, fifty for Latham. He won a good toss and is leading from the front. He's been short of runs in the series but come the decider, he has risen to the occasion. Raises his bat and acknowledges the applause. 136ks on a length and close to off, Latham opens the bat face and punches it square. The fielder from deep backward point gets around and keeps it to a couple
21.5
4
Stokes to Devon Conway, FOUR, that's a gift and Conway accepts it happily. 131ks full delivery angled in, Conway shuffles across a little and clips it off his pads in front of square. No need to run for that..
19.2
4
Stokes to Devon Conway, FOUR, lovely shot! He's played some fine drives today. This has to be right up there. Full pitcher around off, Conway presents the full face of the bat and drives it straight of mid-off
10.5
4
Bashir to Tom Latham, FOUR, that's been the problem with Bashir. Follows up a very good delivery with the one down the leg, and Latham sweeps it fine for a boundary. This also brings up the 50-run opening stand
9.3
4
Josh Tongue to Tom Latham, FOUR, another leg-stump half-volley and Latham clips it to deep mid-wicket for second boundary of the over. You can't bowl such deliveries on what seems to be a belter of a pitch
9.1
4
Josh Tongue to Tom Latham, FOUR, full round the wicket and on the pads. Easy picking for the NZ captain who whips it to deep mid-wicket for a boundary
8.5
4
Atkinson to Devon Conway, FOUR, gets some width this time around and Conway plays the drive on the rise and gets a boundary through the deep point region
5.3
4
Jofra Archer to Tom Latham, FOUR, edged and the ball goes between the second slip and gully. That's precisely where the third slip was on the previous delivery, and could you believe it, the ball has gone exactly where the fielder was. A bit of away movement and was full enough to excite Latham who wanted to punch it through the off side but got a big outside edge. Luckily, there was no third slip
4.4
4
Atkinson to Devon Conway, FOUR, third boundary for Conway through that sweeper cover region. This was once again full and wide and Conway just timed it square of the wicket
3.5
4
Jofra Archer to Devon Conway, FOUR, 135 kph half-volley from Archer outside off and Conway once again times it through sweeper cover to collect his second boundary of the innings
3
4
Atkinson to Devon Conway, FOUR, that should get him going! A half-volley outside off from Atkinson and Conway was quick to pounce on it. Takes a stride forward and drives it through sweeper cover for a boundary
