In just his second Test appearance for West Indies, wicketkeeper-batter Amir Jangoo showed necessary defiance as his unbeaten 78 - off 174 balls - was crucial to West Indies' riposte on Day 2 in Antigua. At the other end of an unbeaten 103-run stand he had captain Roston Chase, who finished the day on 42*, taking West Indies to 271/5.
West Indies started the day brightly. Openers John Campbell and Brandon King saw off the first hour and got going with boundaries, adding 58 for the opening wicket. Milan Rathnayake ended that partnership in the 14th over with the wicket of King, but Campbell carried on in the company of Kavem Hodge, taking West Indies to 89/1 at Lunch.
Sri Lanka came back from the break with renewed sense of vigour as they broke through more regularly in the middle phase. It started with Campbell's dismissal early in the session - to Sonal Dinusha. All of Hodge, Joshua da Silva and Justin Greaves got starts, but couldn't press on beyond the session with a big partnership. Jangoo and da Silva nearly had it - with a 52-run stand that paved the way for a West Indies rebuild but an exceptionally frugal Asitha Fernando (2/25 in 18 overs) removed the latter. West Indies lost four wickets for the addition of 79 runs in the middle session, giving Sri Lanka a chance to reclaim control in the proceedings.
Jangoo and Chase then came together and batted out 203 deliveries, which included the entirety of the final session to put the brakes on Sri Lanka's big ambitions. The visitors were also a bowler short as Lahiru Kumara had left the field with a hamstring struggle early on in the day. Jangoo and Chase capitalised on Sri Lanka's inability to be incisive towards the end by batting out the final session, adding 103 runs and putting West Indies within touching distance of Sri Lanka's first-innings total.
Brief Scores: Sri Lanka 308 (Dhananjaya de Silva 120, Dinesh Chandimal 54; Justin Greaves 3-39) lead West Indies 271/5 (Amir Jangoo 78*, Roston Chase 42*; Asitha Fernando 2-25) by 37 runs
