Marsh, Carse star as Sunrisers Leeds close in on knockout spot

Sunrisers Leeds registered a comprehensive 71-run win over Welsh Fire at Headingley on Sunday (August 9) to strengthen their bid for a spot in the knockouts. They remain in second place on the table with 20 points and a strong Net Run Rate of +1.094, only behind Trent Rockets.

Fire, meanwhile, remain alive in the competition and tied on points with Manchester Super Giants and MI London. Their NRR, however, is inferior to both sides, meaning they will not only need to beat London Spirit in their final league game but also hope that both the Super Giants and MI London lose their respective matches.

Asked to bat first, openers Mitchell Marsh and Ryan Rickelton got the team off to a flying start. Marsh began by bludgeoning Chris Woakes for a six and followed it up with two boundaries. He struck two more sixes and a four before Rickelton joined in on the boundary spree as they raced to 58 for no loss after 25 balls.

The Fire clawed their way back into the contest once the field spread, with Woakes eventually dismissing Rickelton to end the 89-run opening stand. Harry Brook started brightly with two sixes and two fours, but the Fire removed both him and Marsh, who had just reached his fifty, in quick succession.

Zak Crawley’s 12-ball 34-run blitz, which included four sixes and a four, reinfused momentum and the Sunrisers finished strong with Dan Lawrence and Matthew Revis adding to the boundary count at the death.

In response, Fire did not get the kind of start they needed to chase a daunting 202-run target. The bowling was tight and, barring a few boundaries, Fire's openers struggled to find the gaps. Phil Salt was dismissed for a scratchy 13 off 14 and the team only managed 24 runs off the Powerplay.

Matt Short struck three fours off Abrar Ahmed followed by a six off Tom Lawes but Fire were unable to sustain the charge. The 49-run stand between Short and Joe Root took 35 deliveries before Short fell attempting to up the tempo. Root and Jordan Cox's 26-run partnership proved to be the Fire's last meaningful resistance. The innings imploded with Root’s dismissal off the 72nd ball as they lost four wickets for just six runs.

While Tom Kohler-Cadmore and Chris Woakes arrested the slide, all they did was delay the inevitable as the Sunrisers walked away with a massive win.
