PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Punjab Kings slip to their fourth consecutive defeat and miss a huge opportunity to reclaim the top spot on the table. Their bowling and fielding continue to remain major concerns. They have picked up the fewest wickets among all teams this season and once again there were dropped catches at crucial moments. With only three games remaining, the pressure is now mounting on them to break this slump quickly and get their campaign back on track. For Delhi Capitals, the season is still alive - only just, but this win keeps them hanging in the race. There were several positives for them tonight, but none bigger than the emergence of Madhav Tiwari. Playing his very first game, the youngster delivered with both bat and ball. That’s all from this game. Tomorrow, we have Gujarat Titans taking on Sunrisers Hyderabad. Do join us for that encounter. Until next time, goodbye and stay safe..
Madhav Tiwari | Player of the Match: First of all, I would like to thank the management for giving me this opportunity, and I’m lucky enough that I was able to be on the winning side here. (How hard is it being a player like yourself, not really getting a chance?) The mindset is always that if things are not in your hand, you just try to be better in each and every practice session. I worked a lot with him, I worked with Munaf (Patel) sir, I worked on my bowling a lot, and I worked on my range-hitting and stuff like that with the batting coach. And it was fun, and I was happy that I was able to contribute for the team. (Are you a batter who can bowl or vice versa?) I would like to say I’m 100% bowler, 100% batsman. (What sort of preparation went in?) I think the wicket was helping the length balls, so I was kind of sticking to that early on in the phase. And I was trying to mix it with the wide balls and short balls in between. (If he was surprised by being asked to bowl four overs) No, it was not like that. I was prepared and, given the conditions, it was supporting the fast bowlers. And yeah, he (Axar) told me that if I would have gone for runs on my second over, he would have come and bowled. So yeah, lucky enough, I got to bowl four overs for the team. Our batting coach (Ian Bell) just told me, ‘You’ve got the power, you’ve got everything. Just don’t try to do something fancy. Just hold your shape and react to the ball.’ That’s it.
(2/2) (Did you just decide to trust yourself and play freely?) No, honestly I’ve been going in with the same mindset even before this innings. Today it just clicked. You go through phases in cricket, but what’s important is continuing to do the same things consistently. Even today, I just trusted my process. I had a bit of luck too - maybe earlier in the season those catches would’ve been taken. But today luck favoured me and there was a drop catch, the runs came. (A result like this against a strong Punjab side - what does it say about Delhi’s future?) The way the wicket played and the kind of players we have, our bench strength is very strong. I think the future is very exciting for Delhi Capitals. The way these youngsters are stepping up in big moments gives a captain a lot of confidence. I had said earlier too that these players can contribute in multiple ways - batting, fielding, energy on the field. And when young players stand up like this under pressure, it’s a very good sign for the team.
Axar Patel | DC captain (1/2): Obviously, like I’ve been saying from the last few games, the main issue was losing those crucial moments. Whenever the key phases of the game came, we were ending up on the wrong side of them. Even then, I kept saying that this is a very good team and we are playing good cricket. It’s just that one or two moments in games cost us. But that happens in a long tournament. Every day is different. So yes, very happy with the way the team played today and hopefully we can continue like this. (Which phase do you think was the turning point?) I think the first 3-4 overs with the ball we went for 60 runs. In the middle overs, the way Mukesh Kumar and Madhav Tiwari bowled reminded me a bit of the Rajasthan game and I think that became a big moment. Then with the bat, the partnership between me and David Miller settled things down, and after that the youngsters like Ashutosh Sharma and Madhav finished the game beautifully. (You didn’t bowl yourself today. What was the thinking behind that?) The wicket was behaving differently today. After the first few overs, especially when Auqib Nabi bowled, I felt the ball was swinging and seaming as well. We probably didn’t hit the right areas in the first 3-4 overs, but once we realised there was assistance for the fast bowlers, I felt there wasn’t much need for spin. Even when I gave extra overs to Madhav and Auqib, something was happening with the ball. So I thought if the pacers are getting help, then I should continue using them instead of bringing myself on. (You might have had to bowl if Madhav had gone for runs?) Obviously, as a captain you always keep backup plans ready. If Madhav had gone for runs in the first or second over, then maybe you would’ve seen me bowling. But whatever happened, happened for the good.
David Miller: Yeah, we were (behind in the chase). Axar has been working really hard this season and, it hasn't quite gone his way. But tonight he came out with great intent and showed the boys what it's all about. And, that's why he's been playing for so long, just because he's dug in deep and came out with good energy. And obviously gave myself a couple of balls to get going and with the way that he played, allowed me to do that. And we kind of compliment each other pretty well. So it was good. Yeah, it’s a difficult thing, but I suppose just trying to stay calm. I mean there’s always a long journey to get to the end. So it’s just about making sure that I stay really present and, I can only control the next ball. So I will keep reminding myself of that moment and clear the mind, because there’s so many things - run rate, fielding positions, all the different things, bowling changes. So it’s just trying to clear the mind and think pretty clearly. Yeah, there's always incentive (to perform against a former team) but, no, look, it's the nature of league cricket. You go from one team to another. And, yeah, it was just a great opportunity to kind of do what I love and, try and finish games. I felt like a garbage truck getting out there at the back end. But, yeah, it was nice to obviously get the job done and the boys did really well at the back end. Yeah, definitely (there was a change in batting plans). It was a little bit something in the wicket every now and again, stayed a bit low, but generally good bounce here. And obviously the ball travels. So it's just trying to keep the shape and, play good cricket shots because there is a bit of nibble in the wicket, even, towards the back end there, right the way through every now and again. There was one that did something off the wicket. So just trying to really get into good positions. And as you mentioned the lengths that we bowled, I thought we stuck it out really well throughout and knowing the tactic that they would probably bowl.
Shreyas Iyer | PBKS Captain - (Was 210 good enough?) Absolutely, I feel that it was 30 runs more on this wicket considering how the ball was seaming and there was variable bounce. (So was there was a thought in your mind, maybe get an over of Chahal in between?) There was absolutely a thought in my mind, but the way ball was seaming and the way it was helping seamers, I think if we would have executed our line and length precisely, we could have been able to extract wickets, but unfortunately again, we didn't. (Did you think at the end there about yorkers or was it still bowling into the surface?) Still into the surface. I always say that hard length, short of hard length is the best ball, especially when a new batsman is coming in. It's not easy to hit because if you keep repeating those balls, at least one, there's one ball, there's a chance of, you know, mis-hitting and you can get a wicket. We've been short of planning.

23:26 Local Time, 17:56 GMT: What a game! How did Delhi Capitals manage to pull this off and that too with an over to spare? The chase got off to a shaky start with Rahul, Porel and Sahil Parakh all falling inside the powerplay. Stubbs didn’t last long either and at that stage, Punjab Kings looked firmly in control. But then came their skipper Axar Patel, who has endured a difficult season with the bat. Tonight though, he stepped up with his first fifty of the campaign and completely changed the complexion of the chase. He laid the platform brilliantly before Miller carried the baton forward after Axar’s dismissal and brought up a fifty of his own. Miller couldn’t quite finish it off himself, which left the responsibility to Ashutosh and Madhav Tiwari. The pair held their nerve, found the timely boundaries and brought the equation down before Aaqib Nabi sealed the deal. That’s now a fourth consecutive defeat for Punjab Kings and there will definitely be concerns creeping in, especially around their bowling and fielding. There were a couple of dropped catches and defending with the wet ball became increasingly difficult as the innings progressed. Stay around for the post-match presentations..

Yash Thakur to Auqib Nabi, SIX, Delhi Capitals win by 3 wickets. Dar finishes it off in style. This is the highest successful chase at Dharamsala. The Delhi Capitals camp is a happy one. They have been on the wrong side of the result in such close encounters but not today. This win ensures their campaign is not done. Yash cannot execute the yorker - bowls a juicy low full-toss and Dar pumps it down the ground. He gave it everything and the ball travelled the distance

Yash Thakur to Auqib Nabi, no ball, FOUR, that's poor. But it is not easy to bowl with a wet ball. High full toss, well above the waist and Dar does well to whip it backward of square. Delhi Capitals need just 1 run.. Free-hit coming up

Short of length delivery, Ashutosh does not quite get on top of the bounce this time, the pull comes off the top-edge and the ball skies towards wide long-on. Dubey runs to his right and takes a good catch. Ashutosh Sharma c (sub)Praveen Dubey b Yash Thakur 24(10) [4s-2 6s-2]
