West Indies register their first win in the current WTC cycle. It was one of those all-round performances that showed their talent as well as depth. They will hope that it’s the beginning of a new dawn for West Indies in red-ball cricket. Sri Lanka, meanwhile, were found wanting for the majority of this game. Apart from Chandimal’s fifty and Dhananjaya’s classy century in the first innings, they didn’t have much to write home about. We hope you enjoyed our coverage. This is Abhinav Guha signing off on behalf of Kumar Abhisekh Das and Sreenivas. Until next time, goodbye and cheers!
Roston Chase: Not a sigh of relief but one of joy. We didn't get a win out of the 8 Tests before. We got a draw. We came close in New Zealand but we didn't cross the line. To see the guys to come here, plan and execute it is like a dream come true. Huge thank you to the guys. Two things satisfied me a lot. Jangoo getting his double hundred. Because I was out there with him. Jangoo wanted to give it away after his 100. But he knuckled down and got into his zone. Was nice to see him play for the team and not for the personal milestones. And then one of my first room mates Kemar Roach getting to 300 Test wickets. I think he is a great bowler. He is a modern day legend in my eyes. One of the greatest in West Indian cricketing history. We shouldn't get too far ahead of ourselves. Today we had a 300 runs lead and we were on top but it is still important to trust the process and the plans we made. Just said to the guys, just repeat the good things. Try to improve on the parts we weren't that good. The only downfall in this game was that we gave away 50 runs more. Just hoping we will pick up from where we left. As I said, the wicket had a lot more in it. Our pacers were somewhat quicker than the Lankan bowlers. Always knew we will get something more out of it. We had four quality pacers and then Greaves who is a quality all-rounders. Kudos to the guys.
Dhananjaya de Silva: We had enough runs on the board. They were 160 for 5 and we were in the game. But then Chase and Jangoo got the partnership. It was harder than the first innings. The bald patches didn't help. One injury let the whole team down. We were in the game for the first two days. They had five pacers. We only had four. And one got injured. The other three bowled their heart out. We have to take 20 wickets to win a Test. Batters will somehow do the job. But we need to get those 20 wickets.
Amir Jangoo | Player of the Match: It is amazing. Words can't describe what am feeling. Truly grateful for it. I normally get a lot of starts and getting out. When you get to lower scores, the average dips Now I realise when I get a start, I try to carry on. To be a part of a Test win. Happy to be part of the West Indian team. Happy to win one in the Test Championship. I am always ready. You have to be disciplined and put in the hard yards. Lucky enough that we had a good game.
Kemar Roach: First and foremost. It has been a long journey. I am happy that we won. To get up on the championship table. Congrats to Roston for his first win as captain and Sammy for his first win as coach. It has been a long journey. It took a lot. Everyone has been supporting me. I have had countless conversations with our physio. He has been phenomenal. To my family, my mom is watching. She is proud. My kids. My friends. I want to thank all Antigua fans for supporting the team. A win is what we wanted and we have got it. Right now we will celebrate this win. And then discussions will be had. Thank you everyone. I really appreciate. Just bask in the moment right now.
Roach has tears in his eyes while he is appreciated by his teammates. That shows how much this moment means to him. He receives a special jersey to commemorate 300 Test wickets. Seales hands over the jersey to the veteran and they share a warm hug. He has been the backbone of West Indies' red-ball attack. Roach has shown great longevity. He has been around for a long time and he has delivered time and again for the Windies in Tests. Red-ball cricket is as tough it can get and especially when you are a fast bowler - it tests you to the limits. He had suffered a serious head injury during a car crash in 2014 but he miraculously survived. It's not easy to recover from such a shocking experience physically as well as mentally but the way he bounced back has been a testament to his character. He is ageing like fine wine and continues to setup batters with the new ball with his sharp ability to move the ball both ways. It feels great for an ardent cricket fan to witness characters like him flourishing. He is a prime example that will power and determination can help you weather any storm and emerge stronger.
13:19 Local Time, 17:19 GMT, 22:49 IST: Windies have won the first Test. They have taken a 1-0 lead. Sri Lanka were not meant to be pushovers but they have been swatted aside by this West Indian line-up. This is Roston Chase's first win as Test captain. He bailed his team out of trouble with a fine 194 and will now cherish this moment for times to come. Sri Lanka came into day 4 with the possibility of a fight. But the attack led by Roach, who reached 300 Test wickets, was just too hot to handle. Today was about reaping the rewards as Windies had taken the game away on day 3 itself. That 401-run stand between Jangoo and Chase had ensured the Lankans were outbatted. A special shoutout to Jangoo - he showed great maturity and character in only his second Test and scored a terrific maiden double century. This is huge for the West Indian team. They have been trying to stay relevant in this format and this win will certainly help them. Sri Lanka on the other hand, will have to take care of their own problems. One more Test remains and the visitors will look to bounce back!
