England have been dealt another blow going into the Oval Test against New Zealand with seamer Ollie Robinson ruled out with soreness in his right knee.

The injury comes at an unfortunate time for the 32-year-old Robinson, who had only just fought his way back into the Test side after a two-year absence. The seamer made an immediate impact on his return against New Zealand, finishing with seven wickets in the match, including three in his first over, underlining the qualities that had once made him a key part of England's attack.

Robinson's latest setback also deprives him of another opportunity to answer questions around his durability at the highest level. His previous Test had been in Ranchi in February 2024 where he bowled only 13 overs in the Test and none at all in the second innings. Fitness concerns have been a recurring theme through his international career, and after an encouraging comeback at Lord's, he will now have to wait a little longer to build on it.

England confirmed that Robinson will remain with the squad and target a return for the third Test at Trent Bridge, which begins on June 25.

His absence adds to England's growing list of concerns ahead of the second Test. Ben Stokes and Gus Atkinson are already unavailable pending an investigation into an incident at a London nightclub, meaning the hosts will be forced into multiple changes from the side that won the series opener.

Jofra Archer is set to come strongly into the selection frame after rejoining the squad following his IPL stint and training at The Oval over the weekend. England are also keeping a close eye on Jamie Smith's availability, with the wicketkeeper awaiting the birth of his second child.

Meanwhile, New Zealand have also had to adjust their plans following Kane Williamson's retirement from international cricket. Will Young has linked up with the squad as his replacement ahead of the second Test.
