Los Angeles Knight Riders put their indifferent run in Pomona behind them by kickstarting the final leg of their campaign in Dallas with an impressive victory over Washington Freedom. A much-improved batting effort carried them to 192 before Sunil Narine's Powerplay masterclass strangled Freedom's chase. The 18-run win lifted LAKR to eight points, level with three other sides, with only the second-placed Seattle Orcas boasting a superior net run rate.
There had been growing calls within the camp for greater returns from the batting unit, and any shift in approach was tested immediately after Steve Smith opted to bowl. Saurabh Netravalkar removed Colin Munro early before LAKR unveiled a surprise by promoting Andre Russell to No. 3 in search of Powerplay momentum. Russell struck a four and a six but was bowled by Jack Edwards, leaving the Knight Riders wobbling at 17 for 2.
The early setbacks brought together Matthew Tromp and Andre Fletcher, who rebuilt the innings with authority. A 17-run fifth over from Netravalkar helped swing the momentum as LAKR raced to 59 at the end of the Powerplay. Tromp was the aggressor while Fletcher played the anchor role, even enduring a stretch of 19 deliveries without finding the boundary. Tromp brought up his maiden MLC fifty from 35 balls before ending that drought with a straight six off Nikhil Chaudhary. Fletcher eventually fell for a 40-ball 59, ending a 110-run partnership that came off just 69 deliveries.
Tromp followed soon after in the same Ben Dwarshuis over, departing for a 32-ball 50. Netravalkar then struck twice in the 16th over to remove Jason Holder and Rovman Powell, reducing LAKR from a position of control to 144 for 6. However, a vital 46-run stand off only 20 balls between Jahmar Hamilton and Saif Badar provided the late surge, taking the total to a formidable 192.
Having sprung one surprise with the bat, LAKR had another in store with the ball. Narine was entrusted with three overs inside the Powerplay and responded by conceding only 11 runs while removing the in-form Mitch Owen. Freedom's hopes suffered a further blow when Russell struck twice in the sixth over, dismissing both Smith and Rachin Ravindra as the defending champions slumped to 41 for 3.
When Lahiru Milantha struggled to make contact against Ali Khan during the ninth over, the chase appeared all but over. Yet he weathered that difficult phase and launched a counterattack, sparking a flurry of boundaries to briefly revive Freedom's hopes. The comeback proved short-lived, however, as both Milantha and Andries Gous fell to Ali Khan. Shadley van Schalkwyk then picked up two more wickets in the 17th over, effectively extinguishing any remaining resistance and sealing the two points for LAKR.
Brief scores: Los Angeles Knight Riders 192/8 in 20 overs (Andre Fletcher 59, Matthew Tromp 50; Saurabh Netravalkar 3-33) beat Washington Freedom 174/8 in 20 overs (Lahiru Milantha 40; Andre Russell 3-34, Ali Khan 2-18) by 18 runs
