Australia Women vs South Africa Women, 3rd Match, Group A, ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 - CommentaryAUSW vs RSAW, 3rd Match, Group A, ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 - Commentary
If there were any doubts about Australia's credentials coming into this tournament, they have been emphatically put to rest. A statement performance with both bat and ball has sent out an early warning to the rest of the teams. South Africa, meanwhile, will need to regroup quickly, but they can draw comfort from recent history. At the 2025 ODI World Cup, they were bowled out for just 69 in their opening game before producing a remarkable turnaround to reach the final. That's a wrap from this game. But the action doesn't stop here. Up next, it's West Indies taking on New Zealand. Switch tabs and catch all the action from that encounter. Until next time, goodbye and stay safe..
Sophie Molineux | Australia captain: Yeah, absolutely. We were in trouble there at the start. I think the way the girls bounced back, Kappy and Shabs bowled really well in the powerplay, put us on the back foot. So the way that we bounced back and then climbed over in our bowling innings was really pleasing. (The batters kept going) Yeah, I think so. And that's probably the way we want to play. We've got a top order, middle order there that can play all around the ground. And they bat their best when they take the game on. So it's great to see the girls feel like they can do that and have that freedom out there. (A word on Phoebe) Oh, she's amazing, Pheebs. Extremely skilful, but yeah, you can just see that her confidence and, yeah, her game smarts are just going through the roof now. And she's going to be a really key player for us in this tournament. I'm so happy for her to make a few. (What type of captain are you? Gut feel or analysis and analyst?) I get a lot of help with that. Yeah, I think with our right people in the right place in terms of fielding positions, but I suppose with captaincy out there, you do have to go with your gut a little bit. Yeah, there was a pretty spin-friendly wicket by that innings, so we sort of went with that. But yeah, sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't, but today was a good day.
Laura Wolvaardt | South Africa captain: Yeah, tough day today. I thought we had a pretty decent first half. I think restricting them to that score was not too bad, but obviously just lost our way with the bat a bit. Yeah, disappointing loss, but I think they bowled really well and pretty much outplayed us today. (You thought 172 was okay on that surface?) Yeah, I thought it was okay. Maybe a little bit above par, but yeah, it could have been worse. So I think we backed ourselves to go with nines [rpo] or whatever it was. But yeah, just lost our way, struggled to get some momentum in the innings. (On Kapp and Ismail) Yeah, awesome to have them back. I think it's been a long time since we had them bowling together in a powerplay like that. So that was awesome to see. And yeah, I think there are a couple of other bowlers stepping up today, which was nice. de Klerk and Mlaba bowled pretty well too. So yeah, I think that that's going well at least. (On her being starved off the strike) Yeah, it was hard to get going. A bit of a frustrating innings. I think, like you said, got stuck on the other end a bit. And then I felt like they bowled pretty well to me later on and closed up my area. So just struggled to get going, and by the time I went out, it was quite late already. So yeah, just disappointed with that. (On Nadine batting at 4 and is that the way forward?) I think so. I think it's nice to sort of stack our lineup like that a little bit, just to have a little bit of power early. Try not to leave it a little bit too late. But yeah, I think she batted well. She has a lot of different options in that powerplay too. So yeah, I think it's nice to have her up the order. (On expecting her side to fight back) Definitely. Still a long tournament to go. I think we'll just put this game behind us as quickly as we can and move on to the next one.
Georgia Wareham | Player of the Match: I mean, definitely with our batting lineup, I think you can play with a lot of confidence and freedom, knowing that there's still a lot of batting to come. I thought Pheebs was awesome today, the way that she just took on the top order. Yeah, I just thought it was a pretty all-round batting performance from the team. (Does your role change with the ball with a four-pronged spin attack?) I think, depending on the day, I think a lot of us are pretty versatile in where we bowl in the lineup. And I think, yeah, just communicating that out there. I think our job is pretty simple. It's just try to keep the game pretty tight and keep the ball at the stumps. So yeah, it's just nice to be a part of that group. It's just, yeah, a good, good bowling unit. (You are a pivotal part of the fielding set-up) Yeah, I usually try and get myself out on the boundary. I was probably not in the right position there at short cover (Wolvaardt's wicket), so I'll take that one. But yeah, I think between Ash (Gardner) and myself, we try and get in the hot spots out there and usually they're out in the deep. (How is it playing under Sophie?) No, Sophie's been awesome. I think just instilling a lot of freedom within the group and yeah, just making, I guess, the group believe we're capable of being a really good team and taking this tournament on.
This is the third time AUS-W picked eight spin wickets in a T20I innings after against ENG, 2011, and against NZ, 2017.
- 65 runs is the biggest defeat margin for SA-W in T20 WCs, surpassing the 56-run defeat against ENG-W at Basseterre in 2010.
- This is the eighth win in 9 games for AUS-W against SA-W in T20 WCs. The only exception was the 2024 semi-final.
17:38 Local Time, 16:38 GMT, 22:08 IST: Australia got their tactics spot on. Despite this being a chasing venue, they chose to bat first knowing they would be bowling last on a used surface that was expected to slow down as the game progressed. Their positive intent with the bat paid off, helping them post their highest-ever T20I total against South Africa. In reply, South Africa were never really able to build any momentum. Early wickets put them on the back foot and the promotion of Nadine de Klerk to No. 4 failed to provide the spark they were looking for. Laura Wolvaardt held one end up until the 14th over but never looked in any control of the chase. Once she fell, the innings unraveled quickly, with South Africa losing their last 7 wickets for just 25 runs. Australia had anticipated the pitch slowing down and their spinners exploited it expertly. Georgia Wareham was outstanding with 3 for 13, while Alana King and captain Sophie Molineux chipped in with two wickets apiece as South Africa were comprehensively outplayed. Stay tuned for the post-match reactions..
