PBKS

MI

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
MI had nothing riding on this game, but that helped them come out and play freely. On the other hand, the pressure was entirely on PBKS and they cracked under it, especially in the last 3 overs. This result has opened up the table - CSK and RR are just one point behind 4th placed PBKS and they both have a game in hand. CSK gets the first chance to jump ahead when they face the Lucknow Super Giants tomorrow. Like MI, the men from Lucknow have nothing but pride to play for and that could make them dangerous. Join us tomorrow for all the action from Lucknow. For now, cheers and bye..
Tilak Varma | PoTM: (It's becoming a habit finishing off games?) I always say that I love finishing games, but playing in the World Cup and playing quite a few international games for the country helps me (understand) how to finish games, and you get that experience and confidence. So with that, I think I keep improving my game. (Did you make adjustments based on the pitch?) To be honest, we weren’t expecting the wicket to be like this because the ball was (coming on) slightly slow and low, so it was not easy to hit strokes. We saw in the first half how Punjab struggled in the first 15 overs. After that, Azmatullah (Omarzai) and Vishnu (Vinod), the way they played, got them to a good total. But we were thinking that we will take the game as deep as possible. And I was believing in myself that I could do it (finish the game). So I was just holding my shape and backing my basics. I was believing in myself that I’d finish the game. (Was it a plan to attack Yuzi for 22 runs?) To be honest, when we had the second strategy timeout, I was talking to the coach that just one big over and we will finish off the game. Just keep believing in me, I’ll do it for the team. So that’s what I said, and I was just waiting for that one big over. Unfortunately, it came off Yuzi bhai's (last) over (smiles). But yeah, I’m glad that I finished the game. (Conversation with Will Jacks?) To be honest, Will’s innings really helped finish the game. The way he played, I just said to him: hold your shape and wait for the slower ones because the ball is flying here. If they bowl quick ones and you blindly swing, if it just hits the bat, it’s going. So wait for that slower one - that’s the only ball we were actually slightly struggling to hit the sixes. So he held his shape well, got a few sixes, and they were under pressure.
Jasprit Bumrah | MI captain: (Winning start as captain) Yeah, one from one. But yeah, it was a good game of cricket. Both teams played some good cricket. We really pulled (it) back well after a decent start. Little bit of a slip-up in the end when we dropped a few catches, but apparently, it looks like bowling in the end has become more difficult now (smiles). (Did you make plans based on the last match here?) Little bit, but the wicket in this game looked a little bit drier than the previous one. The previous game had a little more pace by the looks of it. And initially when we bowled, the ball was holding up and staying a little low. So I think maybe it's not as full as it was last game today. So that made me to have a decision that we took. But we were pretty clear in what we wanted to do though. (Plan to bowl pace off and cross-seam attacking the stumps?) Yeah, that was the plan that was discussed that, whatever we saw in the previous game as well and reading the game, that holding your length is the key. Because if you try to bowl too short or too full, because of the altitude, the ball just flies. So even if after getting hit off a good ball, you try to back that and make them hit good shots. So that was the plan and credit to all the bowlers. They executed it and kept their nerves as well. (What was the turning point?) I think Tilak's knock and the way Shardul bowled, both of them deserve equal amount of credit. And the way Tilak held his nerve. Sometimes wickets around him going, people not being able to contribute, but he kept his shape, kept his belief, finished the game and Jacksy (Will Jacks) coming in. Yeah, it's a small contribution, but when that has a big impact on a T20 game. So yeah, really happy. Everybody contributed. That's what we want. (Experience as captain of MI) Yeah, first game, like I said, I've captained a Test match. I've captained T20Is. Now the only game that is left is ODI cricket. But I don't see that happening (laughs), but jokes apart. Really happy. I had good fun, good weather, great ground. So enjoyed my time.

Shreyas Iyer | PBKS captain: (On the loss tonight) Well, absolutely a tough pill to swallow, but I don't want to pinpoint at any situation over here because it was a great game of cricket. Well fought game. He (Tilak) played amazing, he was selecting his shots pretty well, and he maneuvered the field nicely, so credit to him. (On Azmat) Certainly, at a point, we were looking at around 170 to 180, and from there on, he simply changed the momentum towards us. Getting those scoops of sixes, and from 16th or 17th over, from there on, we gained the momentum and getting to 200 was a commendable performance for him. (Taking on RCB in a day game?) Definitely excited for the next opportunity. It's an afternoon game, and we've got to win two out of two. It's going to be an exciting two games. Can't wait to play them.
Will Jacks: Yeah, definitely feeling better after a victory! Obviously, the story of our season hasn’t quite gone the way we would have liked, but there is still so much to play for in these remaining games. It’s always good to get a win on the board. We were really just focusing on their tactics. There is one very large boundary here, so we knew they would try to protect that side. It’s a big help when you come in and the other guy has already been out there for 25 or 30 balls; he can give you a feel for the pace of the pitch and what the bowlers are trying to do. I really just fed off that information. I’m not so sure about the pace-off balls, but it felt like when we were bowling cross-seam and hitting the pitch hard on a back-of-a-length, a few were skidding through. We knew that’s exactly what they would try to do to us as well. I actually quite enjoyed it—there was something for the bowlers, and even with 200 on the board, it was a very competitive game. It’s difficult! There are so many options, different tactics, ground dimensions, and specific match-ups to consider. Every day is different. You can’t really chase it; you just have to do the job you're told to do. Thank you
23:21 Local Time, 17:51 GMT, 23:21 IST: Punjab Kings look deflated as they slip to their 5th straight loss. They've been stuck on 13 points for a long time and now CSK and RR are right behind them in the race for the playoffs. Once again, it's the bowlers who have failed to deliver. They were not at their best with the bat, but they still conjured up a 200 score on the board. Ryan Rickelton started the chase with a brisk 48 off 23 balls. However, PBKS fought back superbly as the Mumbai Indians slipped from 61 for 0 to 88 for 3. Tilak Verma though held his ground, stitching a useful partnership with Sherfane Rutherford. However, after a superb 17th over from Azmatullah Omarzai (2 runs and a wicket), MI needed 50 runs off the last three overs. Marco Jansen hasn't quite nailed his bowling this season, he went for 22 in the 18th over. Arshdeep was better, but he too went for 13 and Xavier Bartlett couldn't defend 15 off the final over. MI were already out of contention for a place in the playoffs, but they can play party-poopers and they've started with the Punjab Kings. They've two more games left and they'll look to enjoy both. Back shortly for the presentations..

Xavier Bartlett to Tilak Varma, SIX, MI win, Tilak Varma has done it for his team - banged in short and at the stumps, he picks the length early, swivels across and then hammers it over deep backward square leg, just over the ropes and he's off in joy

Xavier Bartlett to Tilak Varma, SIX, hammered, it's now MI's game to lose - 2 needed off 2 balls - was the slower short ball from Bartlett, but it sat up to be hit and Tilak carved it high over cover for a maximum

Xavier Bartlett to Tilak Varma, no run, dot ball, this game is swinging either ways - Bartlett shortened the length and pushed one across the left-hander as Tilak shuffled across, a swipe and a miss
