PLAYER OF THE MATCH
So, that's it from our side! We were treated to a low-scoring thriller on a surface where the ball nipped around. You are never quite in as a batter on a surface like this. The batters from both sides struggled for rhythm and were consistently kept on their toes. The seamers had a gala time and if you are a purist of the game, you will always enjoy a balanced contest between bat and ball. We hope you enjoyed our coverage. Join us for the 2nd ODI from the same venue after a couple of days. Until next time, goodbye and cheers!
Richard Ngarava | Zimbabwe captain: (Discussions at the halfway stage?) The discussion in the dressing room was that, as Zimbabweans, we are capable of coming through any situation. We believed we could fight our way out of it. We fight till the end and we do it as a pack. (On their ninth-wicket partnership) We just wanted to keep things simple, watch the ball and play accordingly. (On the victory) It feels pretty nice, it's a great feeling. Hopefully it continues. I am quite happy I have been able to put a smile on their (fans) faces. The crowd support was great. They are our twelfth man and it's great to have them.
Newman Nyamhuri | Player of the Match: (On his feelings after his performance) I'm quite happy. I did the job for the team, yeah. (On team discussions at the halfway stage?) We were telling each other that at the end of the game, we have to fight and put everything in the field. (On his partnership with Ngarava) He was just telling me to stay in there and wait for the loose balls. (On the surface) I think the pitch was favouring the bowlers. It was doing a lot.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz | Bangladesh captain: (On their bowling performance) Yes, I think we bowled really well, especially Nahid Rana. He took six wickets. That was excellent. And yes, we can get better in a few areas, but they got a partnership for the ninth wicket. That's crucial runs, the 63-run great partnership. And yes, a little bit disappointed with our batting unit. (On Rana's 6-fer) That was great. And I think Nahid Rana, the platform we built the last few series, the way they bowled, that was excellent. And I hope that if we continue, definitely it would be better for our team. We can do better, but we have to bowl the right area. But they made a very good partnership. Both batsmen played really well at that time. (Concerns in the batting department?) Yes, yes. If we get a partnership in the first 10 overs, definitely it would be better, but we didn't get it. And we have to take responsibility for that. You know, 142 runs is not easy in those conditions, but still we're trying. If we make a partnership first, it would be better.
Brad Evans: (On their bowling performance) Yeah, look, I think bowling at a total like that's quite simple. You've got nothing to lose. But I think what we wanted to tell everyone and show the world is we're a team of fighters and we just fight every ball. And usually when you do that and it comes together like that, it's fun to watch and fun to play. (On defending 141) Look, I thought they bowled really well and we had a great start and then just a collapse. But, you know, that last eight-wicket partnership, or whatever, got us to a total. And we were actually saying, "120, boys, you know, it's something to bowl at." And yeah, I mean, we just kept it simple, I think, and it worked. It was just about persisting and just going and just trusting that the collapse was around the corner, two wickets in an over is around the corner. And if you get a low-scoring game, you just always put two wickets on the scoreboard to see where the game's actually at. We kept saying in the huddle, "Boys, I think we'd rather be us here than them," and the whole way through. So, yeah, it's fantastic.
Their lower middle order and lower order failed to come to terms on a surface where the ball was nipping around with extra bounce and kept crumbling like a pack of cards. The well-set Nurul Hasan was the key for the visitors in the tense run-chase but he was trapped in front by an inswinging delivery and that was a telling blow for them. The tailenders swung their bat around but the ploy didn't work out for their side. Eventually, Bangladesh fell 26 runs short. The shot selection of the Bangladeshi batters was questionable. A lot of their batters chased deliveries wide outside off and threw their wickets away. They needed someone to anchor the innings but it didn't turn out that way. All the frontline Zimbabwean seamers bowled with great heart and got the rewards when it mattered the most. Stick around for the presentations...
16:06 Local Time, 14:06 GMT, 19:36 IST: Zimbabwe have put in a cracking bowling performance in a low-scoring thriller to defy Bangladesh. At the halfway stage, many would have backed Bangladesh to win this 99 out of 100 times. But cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties and Zimbabwe were outstanding with the ball and in the field to win against the odds. In hindsight, the 63-run stand between Nyamhuri and Ngarava for the ninth wicket was really crucial. That gave the hosts something to fight for and oh boy! How well the Chevrons put on a show in front of their home crowd! The Bangladeshi top-order was dismantled within the first five overs courtesy a fiery new ball spell from Muzarabani and Ngarava. Both Hridoy and Nurul Hasan (promoted up the order) looked nervy initially but they dug in and showed great resistance. The 49-run stand between the duo seemed to have bailed the visitors out of trouble but the dismissal of Hridoy was the turning point in the match.
